Lambotte confirms the arrival of de László's portrait of Pope Leo XIII [4509] from Berlin, and the plans for it to be photographed for reproduction in the exhibition catalogue. Lambotte adds that he is delighted to hear de László will also exhibit a portrait of Comte Jean de Castellane, likely [3765]

The sender writes that he would have preferred to see two large scale portraits of society ladies, rather than those of Pope Leo XIII [4509] and Cardinal Rampolla [4511]. He adds that the head of the Princess of Meiningen [5101] is "very delicate and modest but the general public does not understand this"

She sends the artist a photograph of her home, adding that her dog is looking "twice as beautiful" now and, should he like to paint both the house and the dog, Lady Pembroke would be delighted. Draft reply from de László in Lucy's hand on the same page thanking "Lady Muriel" for the photographs

Letter from Miklós Szmrecsányi to de László confirming receipt of the photographs of de László's portraits of Mrs Burke [née Van Riemsdijk] [110584], Pope Leo III [4509] and Madame von Jaunez [5835]. Szmrecsányi has sent three photographs to Pica (possibly Vittorio Pica) and has requested good photographs be taken of Madame Hubay de Szalatnya [4825] and Mrs Van Montagu [née Trouton] [11580]. Whilst Arte Mondiale's paper and printing are not very good, his main concern is that de László be "extensively represented". Szmrecsányi has followed the artist's success with "feelings of friendship and pleasure", looking upon him with patriotic pride." "I could always see and appreciate that the highs have not turned your head", he writes, "and this is always the hallmark of true talent." He would like to accept de László's invitation, but suggests meeting in Rome in October, perhaps together with Albert Berzeviczy

Letter from de László's sister Paula (known as Pauline) to the artist concerning painting boards, framing and family matters. Pauline has made arrangements with Franz Dury, a framer and art supplier in Munich, to have painting boards sent to de László. Drury has also framed de László's portrait of her [2817] and the childrens' portrait. She has contacted Konrad Barth's regarding the original frame of the Pope's portrait [4509] and, following some research, has found a similar profile. The remainder of the letter deals with her charity work, health, family gravestones and her disapproval of her sons' lifestyles. She remarks that "the Hitler Case makes people here feel rather worried" (Hitler's twenty-four day trial for high treason following the so-called "Beer Hall Putsch" was ongoing at the time)

Postcards from the duchesse de Gramont to de László regretting that they missed the artist. She has sold five photographs of the Queen of Romania and five of the Pope, and she requests the photographs be sent to her. Two of the photographs are for the ex Duchess of Marlborough, née Vanderbilt (DLA015-0032 and DLA015-0033 were previously partial items that have now been merged into DLA015-0032. The winner of the first prize, Miss Adeline Walker in the costume of New Zealand, will be painted by de László [13294] (DLA095-0100 is a duplicate of this item)
